Beginning with the sound of a single chord reverberating through silence, Olreilion unfolds as a tapestry of delicate piano phrases, warm synths, blankets of soft noise, and organic soundscapes.
Recorded on gently humming tape, the album presents a slow journey through memory and the inner self, pausing often to revel in the scenery.
Somewhere within the confines of the electronic devices heard throughout the work there is a sense of physicality, lending visceral presence to an otherwise artificial sound.

“Surrounded by vast and vaporous brush strokes, the piano, muted and hushed, sings softly and faint, with melodies, accents and notes, with frail and delicate minimalism, that is at once guarded and vulnerable…a deep dive into reductionist pianism and isolationist ambience” - Headphone Commute
*Featured on Headphone Commute’s Best of 2019*

“A soothing blanket of gentle tape hiss, faint drones & becalmed synthwork with the gentlest of piano phrases to pacifying ambient effect” - The Slow Music Movement

“Fluttering piano lines like waves of tone that peak and crest, recede and gather…static surrounds these subtle movements that define themselves in their absence, suspended in air as if held up by gossamer thread.” - Tome to the Weather Machine

A collection of pieces born from periods of waiting, episodes of uncertainty, and moments of warmth.
This 6-track EP-length work brings together fragments of leftover sounds - old piano recordings, unused tape loops, timestretched strings - rediscovered during periods of isolation, and revisited from a place of stillness and quietude.

All tracks written and performed by Marty Hicks
Tracks 3 and 6 recorded by Alexander Beck, March 2015
Mastered by Joe Talia

Narrated by strings of plucked piano phrases that come and go like afterthoughts, The Elia Passages is either the retelling of a culture that has yet to exist, or the remembrances of one that may never have existed.

The gently wavering carpets of synth conjure up images of houses overrun by greenery, faded fabric, smoke billowing into the night. The muffled sound of bonfires, quiet storms, and running water lend a sense of physical presence to the music, as one might vaguely remember the sound of a place a specific memory is tied to - but the tales told in the Elia Passages, like most myths, exist outside of time: beyond the sonic environment they present, the space they occupy is that of the imagination.

'Mooncalf' is a 45-minute work for piano and voice. A treatise on the beauty of imperfection, impermanence and fragility, the work draws on a multitude of influences spanning literature, film and history.

Revelling in the moments in music that would normally be discreetly shifted aside - such as audible breaths, extraneous noises, cracks in the voice, and the rustling of material and machine inside the piano - 'Mooncalf' heralds these as sounds sharing the same value and beauty as the notes that are a product of them, celebrating the inescapable humanity, and inherent imperfection, in making music.

“I feel like [Marty] is a younger, better version of me - assuming that is complimentary […] his 2013 album, Mooncalf, is beautiful.”
-
Luke Howard

"...totally captivating energy throughout...Darvidis and Hicks create a truly beautiful sound together. Full of subtle surprises, this is creative music with maturity and sophistication well beyond the years of its creators.
A superb debut album."

-Andrea Keller

"...a wonderful example of creative, beautiful music-making. No surprise here, for [Marty's] playing has always had a wonderful subtlety to it, as do his compositions. This recording is a fine example of these qualities. Listen."
-Tony Gould

piano/composition - Marty Hicks        ~       voice - Georgie Darvidis

Recorded over the span of five months on rundown upright Yamaha pianos at Ritsumeikan University, 'Kyoto, or: On the Sound of Wind Through Trees (and Over Pine Needles)' is both a musical love letter to city rich in history, culture and aesthetic appreciation, and a pillow book full of fond, formative memories.

The homemade album contains ten improvisations centered around select Japanese aesthetics, and contains numerous field recordings that compliment the music with their sense of aural tangibility: evening cicadas at the close of Kyoto's languid summer; the deep echoing reverberations of Buddhist chanting in a mountain temple; the running of water in a village rivulet.
